Step five: Erase everything and start again.

Step six: Give up and/or get distracted by some other project.

Step seven: Toy with several half-ideas, but don’t develop them for fear of finding out later that they were in fact bad ideas.

Step eight: Half-heartedly start to develop/continue to toy with one of the half-ideas, all the while telling yourself that it won’t go anywhere and it’s probably a waste of time.

Step nine: Wake up in the middle of the night to realize that this half-idea that you’ve been toying with could not only be really good, but could also incorporate some of the material that you came up with earlier and really liked but finally erased because it seemed to go nowhere.

Step ten: GET EXCITED: You’ve still got it! How could you ever have doubted yourself? Become obsessed with fleshing out your new idea, working night and day until it is absolutely perfect.

Step eleven: Get stuck on some minor aspect. Obsess/vacillate over various possible but seemingly unsatisfactory solutions for a while.

Step twelve: Finally decide/concede that it must be finished. Be happy with your creation but also sad because the excitement of being inspired and working with your inspiration is over. Return to step one.

I’ve started a songwriting project this year : write and record one song per month every month. Sounds simple enough, but it’s been tough to stick to, what with everyday life tending to soak up one’s free time the way it does.

This track here, “the Wolves,” is the first of the project’s output that I’m really happy with, both in terms of the song and the recording. I think I’d rather leave the song up to interpretation rather than hash out all of my writing process, etc, so I’ll stop here and let you just listen.

I’m just back from two weeks in Cuba, my first time back since 2004, when I was there to do my fieldwork for my thesis. This time around, Cécile and I spent many an afternoon blissfully strolling around Habana Vieja, stopping here and there to dance and jam with the groups who play in bars and on street corners all around the neighborhood.

One group I remembered from a previous trip, as they’re one of the few groups in La Habana to play a real old-style son with a marimbula and a botija instead of a double bass! The group is called Típico de Sones, and I’ve included here a clip of us jamming together on Compay Segundo’s Chan chan.

I’ve been playing this tune for quite a while now. I wrote it for Cécile back when we were on two opposite ends of the Earth (she in France and I in the US), and since then it’s stayed one of both of our favorites.

It’s a pretty simple song, as far as the harmony and the overall approach go. Maybe that’s why it works so well?

It’s real debut was at our wedding in the states, when I sang it during the ceremony. Even though lots of friends and family had already heard it – at our house, at my parents’ house, down in Burgundy with the grandparents, or just about any time a pulled out the guitar! – there were still some among the guests who weren’t even aware that I sang!

I’ve included just the first 2 minutes of the song here, but if you’re interested, contact me and I’ll send you the full track.

A few weeks ago, the members of Barrio del Este were asked to perform for the special Journée Africaine held every year in the Parisian suburb Villiers-sur-Marne. It’s a charity event to raise money for the organization called Hirondelle d’Afrique, which runs a free school in the town of Grand Popo, Bénin.

We’ve been asked to do the gig in the past, but the dates never worked out for all of the musicians involved. Finally, this year, everyone was in town and free and willing to help out this great organization. The result was a super street party featuring Barrio del Este as the “headlining” act.

Our friend and de facto fan club president Noriko Nookoo was there to document the event, and came away with several great photos and some fine video clips, including the one you see here (click on the image in the top left of the article to play the video). Noriko has been nice enough to set up and run our Barrio del Este Facebook Page, open to anyone (no need to be on Facebook already), where you can find many recent photos and videos like this one – go check it out!

It’s been 5 years since Cécile and I first got together. To celebrate, we treated ourselves to a long weekend in Rome. Simply incredible! It was my first time there and her second, but first “real” experience of the place. Such beauty! Everywhere you turn, something else catches your eye. We took about 400 photos over the course of the trip, the best of which I’ve posted on facebook.

The photos are all taken with the iPhone – I must say, I am fairly impressed with the quality of the iPhone pics. Of course, it’s no replacement for a real camera, but I love having it handy all the time. Every time I go on a trip I either forget my camera or forget to take it out when exciting things are happening. So having a phone that also takes decent pictures is just what I need.

I shouldn’t forget to mention that another big part of our trip (as it usually tends to be, with Cécile and I) was the FOOD.

Two words :

YUMMY

Although we did visit the Basilica and see the Sistine Chapel (breathtaking, of course), my real ecstatic experience took place at Giolitti’s gelateria, where I had the most amazing pistacchiogelato of all time. I also highly recommend a little place just next to Piazza di Pietra, Antonio al Pantheon, where I devoured a scrumptious maltagliatti al tartufo nero. Delicioso!
